How to Build a Business Model
A business model describes the method used by organizations conducting business to generate profits. Business model creation requires a thorough understanding of what the company is doing and how it makes money. To do this, you must know who the customer is and how to get them. For example, manufacturing companies have process steps to create an item, and a business model works similarly. The benefit is that a business model can help you increase revenue by looking at a system. To get started, you should start by looking at current models in similar companies.

1
Learn how to effectively use a business model to earn greater profit by finding out how you earn sales. Business models will address all functions of a business. This includes the revenues, expenses, corporate structure, operating methods and sales and marketing strategies. Create a diagram that incorporates all of these using a piece of paper or a computer.

2
Describe the company, the consumer, the product/service, the experience and reputation created based on your business effort. When money is transferred from the customer to you, the business model should show this, too. For example, demonstrate how the money flows to each department to maintain the attention of the consumer to encourage them to share their experience with peers (i.e., referrals).

3
Find sample business models from related companies and determine what you can borrow for your business model. For instance, if your business is in the wedding industry, you should refer to how experts shaped their business that have longevity in the field (i.e., Vera Wang). Learning from others can save you time and money in research. Use the cited Hoovers link as a resource or consult with your local library for assistance.

4
Create a customer-oriented business model using a template based on information contained in step 1 (i.e., the functions of business). Use a free option, like Google Docs, to create a business model with a visual flow chart. It will give you a way to determine what happens in a chronological order. Editing it will be easier as you work. Save the file and maintain it as part of your business records (i.e., with the business plan). To view an example, refer to the resource section in the board of innovation link.

5
Build a visual business model with icons to help ensure that there is a clear distinction among each component involved in the selling process of a product or service. As a result, you should be able to establish a system that can be replicated to generate more profit from satisfied customers.
