In any sport, learning the fundamentals is key to mastering all of the elements of the game. All types of billiards and pool, no matter the rules, require the same control of the cue stick. 1
Balance the cue stick on two or three fingers and adjust it until it stays parallel with the floor. This is the balance point of the stick, which determines where you should grip the stick.
-
2
Wrap the three middle fingers of your right hand (or left if you're left-handed) around the cue roughly 3 to 4 inches below the balance point. This gives you optimum power and control.

3
Place your other hand flat on the table and place the cue stick shaft (the skinny end) between your thumb and pointer finger. You can either slide it between the lifted thumb and flat index finger of you can wrap your pointer finger around the shaft for extra control.
-
4
Bend your knees slightly, with your right foot (unless you're a lefty) directly under your right armpit and your left foot straight in front of you. This balances your weight and lowers your center of gravity.
-
5
Straighten your left arm and rock your right arm back and forth like a pendulum to stroke the ball.
-
6
Keep your head low. Your chin should nearly touch the cue stick. This gives you a direct line of sight and keeps you from harder estimations on shots. Your stick should be almost parallel to the floor unless you have to reach or use English on your ball.
