How to Make a Square Tablecloth
Apparel and home decor projects provide a useful way to practice your sewing skills and techniques. Some projects are easier than others, and are suitable for those who are still categorized as beginners. A square tablecloth has only one piece and uses finishing techniques that are basic. For under an hour of time investment, you can both dress up your home, and experience the satisfaction of a job well done.
Things You'll Need
- Tape measure Woven fabric Washer and dryer Iron Ironing board Straight quilting ruler Sewing marking pen Sewing shears or rotary cutter Sewing machine set to a straight stitch
Instructions
-
-
1
Measure the square table that you intend to use the tablecloth with. Record these measurements.
-
2
Purchase a piece of woven fabric that fits your decor and will accommodate the size of your table. Most woven fabric is 56 inches wide. Account for an overhang that extends anywhere from 8 to 10 inches over your table for a standard, casual tablecloth. Purchase two cuts of fabric if necessary.
-
-
3
Pre-wash the fabric with a hot wash and hot dry cycle.
-
4
Lay the fabric on your ironing board and press the fabric to remove wrinkles.
-
5
Measure the fabric to the correct dimension and mark with a sewing pen. Add the size of the surface of your square table to the desired length of the overhang, plus another inch for a seam allowance.
-
6
Cut the fabric for the square tablecloth with the sewing shears or rotary cutter. Follow your marked line or cut along the edge of the straight quilting ruler.
-
7
Sew and press the center seam if your square tablecloth requires two cuts of fabric.
-
8
Clip about 1/2 inch off each corner of the square tablecloth, preparing to create a clean hem.
-
9
Create a narrow rolled hem around each edge of the square tablecloth. Place the fabric under the sewing machine with the underside facing upwards. Fold the fabric in towards the body of the tablecloth about 1/3 inch. Fold the fabric inward again to cover the raw edge of the first fold. Stitch close to the folded edge, ensuring that the stitching hits the corner cleanly before pivoting at each turn.
-
10
Remove the finished square tablecloth from the sewing machine and press firmly, applying pressure to the bottom of the tablecloth, paying careful attention to the rolled hem.

Tips & Warnings
The process for making a rectangle tablecloth is identical, with only the dimensions of the fabric changing. You can also create an easy rolled hem using a serger.
Exercise care if using a rotary cutter, as they are extremely sharp and slip easily. When holding the rolled hem in place, keep your fingers out of the way of the sewing machine needle.
