How to Get Nail Polish Stains Out of Carpet

Nail polish spilled on your carpet can make for a stressful situation.

Aside from the pigment in nail polish, it also has ingredients that help it adhere to the surface until removed with nail polish remover. But when your nail polish ends up on your carpet, you want to lift the nail polish stain as soon as possible. Rather than reach for the carpet cleaner, use supplies found in the home to successfully remove nail polish stains from your carpet.

Things You'll Need

• Baking soda
• Vacuum
• Bowl
• White vinegar
• Clean cloths
• Window cleaner

Instructions

1. Pour baking soda over the entire nail polish stain on your carpet. Allow the baking soda to sit on the nail polish for 10 minutes to absorb the liquid. Using an absorbent, like baking soda, allows you to remove nail polish substance without spreading it further into the carpet fibers.

2. 

   A vacuum helps remove stains that have seeped into carpet fibers.

   Vacuum up the baking soda and the nail polish that's been soaked up with the vacuum hose.

3. Fill a bowl with white vinegar. Dab a clean cloth into the vinegar, then blot the remaining nail polish stain on your carpet. Move to a clean portion of the cloth, reapply vinegar and continue to dab at the nail polish stain, working from the outside of the stain toward the middle.

4. Spray window cleaner on any last remnants of the nail polish stain on your carpet. Blot at the stain with a clean cloth until there's no trace of nail polish left on your carpet.

5. Place a clean cloth on the site of the nail polish stain on your carpet. Stand or press on the cloth to wick up as much moisture from the carpet as possible. Allow your carpet to air dry.

Tips & Warnings

• Scrape off hardened nail polish stain substance before tending to the remaining stain.

• If nail polish smell lingers after you've removed the stain, pour baking soda on your carpet and allow it to sit overnight to neutralize the odor.
