1
Cut the wood to size. You will want to cut the 3/4-inch dowel to 6 1/2-inches in length. Cut 1/4-inch off the top of the solid ball to create a flat surface.
-
2
Taper the dowel ends. In a circular motion, continually sand down the end 1/2-inches of the dowel until they have a nice circular shape, but not exactly a point.
-
-
3
Chisel out the wooden ball. Gently remove the interior of the ball until it is left with a 1/8-inch rim around the perimeter. Smooth away rough edges with sandpaper.
-
4
Drill a hole through the side of the ball. Use a 1/2-inch drill bit to gently drill a hole into the center of the bowl end.
-
5
Insert the dowel into the hole. Use your hand to push the dowel as far as you can into the ball. Gently tap it two to three times with a hammer to wedge it in more firmly.
-
6
Drill through the dowel to create the air path. Select a 1/8-inch drill bit, and drill from one end of the dowel down through to the opposite end.
-
7
Finish the bowl. Use sandpaper to gently smooth out any rough edges. Gently sand to shape the bowl to your desired appearance.
