How to Adjust a Tell Door Closer
Tell Manufacturing's door closers are adjustable to prevent wind from slamming a door shut or holding a door open, to prevent a departing customer from slamming a door into an incoming customer, or to foil a running thief from slamming a door open while escaping. They also have adjustments that regulate how quickly a door closes, allowing slow-moving customers to enter without being bumped by a closing door, and an adjustment that lets the door move into the latched position quickly, or slowly, in its final movement. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Look at both ends of the door closer. One end has two adjustment screws, the other two adjustment hex-head bolts. To make adjustments, always look at the flat side of the closer as the "bottom" so that one screw is on the left and one on the right, and one bolt on the top and one on the bottom.

2
Adjust the speed at which the door closes by turning the screw on the left clockwise to slow the speed. Speed the rate of closure up by turning the screw on the left counterclockwise. Lower the rate at which the door latches (the "slam" factor at the end of the closing process) by turning the screw on the right clockwise, or speed the rate up by turning the screw counterclockwise.

3
Adjust the spring power of the door--greater spring power means the door will close when a heavy wind tries to hold it open or keep it from closing suddenly when a heavy wind tries to blow it shut--by turning the top bolt, marked "P," clockwise, to increase the power against winds, or counterclockwise to decrease the power against the wind.

4
Adjust the back check of the door--which prevents an uncontrolled opening of the door--by turning the bottom bolt, marked "BC," clockwise to increase the back check and slow the rate at which the door opens, and counterclockwise to decrease the back check and increase the rate at which the door can be opened.

Tips & Warnings
The closing time (the left screw) should be adjusted so that it allows handicapped customers or small children enough time to enter fully. The door should close from fully open in four to six seconds.
Never turn the "BC" adjustment clockwise until it stops. It will damage the closer and lock it in the closed position.
