How to Tie a Karate Belt Correctly

Belts are a very important part of your karate outfit. While the gi is the official karate uniform, the belt represents what level of karate you can perform. The belt colors progress from white either to yellow, green, brown and black or to yellow, orange, green, blue, brown and black, according to All Karate. When you perform karate you need to wear your belt properly, which means it has to be tied in the correct fashion.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the belt around your waist so that the side of the belt with the label is shorter than the other length. Wrap the longer side of the belt around your waist one more time until the two loose ends are even lengths.

    • 2

Tuck the end of the belt with no label up and under the two lengths of belt wrapped around your waist. Fold it down over the two layers of belt.

    • 3

Pull the labeled end of the belt under the other end of the belt and wrap it around the top of the other end of the belt, tucking it into the knot the other end created when it was looped around the lengths of belt.

    • 4

Pull both sides of the belt until they are tight and of equal length.
