How to Make Yarn Scarf Tassels

How to Make Yarn Scarf Tassels thumbnail
Tassels come in handy for a lot of things.

When making items such as scarves, knitters and crocheters refer to these projects as mindless knitting or mindless crocheting. This phrase simply means the project is easy, and you don't have to count stitches, change colors or do anything fancy that would require close concentration. Most yarn crafters like to do mindless work occasionally so they can talk to their friends while working on a project. Equally as easy, adding tassels to a scarf requires little concentration. After going through the procedure once, you'll be able to repeat the process and enjoy a "gab-fest" at the same time.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide how long you want the tassels to be. Keep in mind that the yarn gets folded in half, so fold a piece of yarn in half and see how you like the length. Add 1/2-inch more to allow for the knot. When you decide on the length you want, cut a piece of cardboard that length and about 2 inches wide.

    • 2

Cut a length of yarn about 6 inches long and thread into the tapestry needle to use later. Take the end of the skein of yarn and wrap it around the cardboard seven times. Insert the needle you prepared under all the strands of thread at the upper end of the cardboard. Knot the yarn around the strands and pull tightly.

    • 3

Cut the yarn loops at the lower end of the cardboard. Take one end of the length of yarn cuttings and thread through the hole provided for the tassel on the scarf. Fold the yarn cuttings in half the way they would hang as a tassel. Thread the end with the fold through the hole on the scarf just far enough so you have a loop on the other side. Pick up the ends of the strands, thread through the loop and pull tightly. You just made a very easy tassel on the scarf.
