Becoming a life coach

A life coach is responsible for helping an individual identify what is holding her back from having everything she wants in life, and coaching her to overcome those challenges. A life coach is trained to coach clients on relationships, career setbacks, financial setbacks and spirituality. Because certification in life coaching is unregulated in Canada, becoming a life coach does not require a lot of education, training or experience.

      Research life coaching programs in your area. Most large companies in the life coaching business conduct seminars available throughout the year that you can register for, but also book in-house seminars if you are unable to attend the public seminar once a year. Most of these seminars are held over a weekend so be sure that you can dedicate the full three days. Private colleges also offer an online, distance education certificate program in life coaching.

      Attend the next available seminar in your city or sign up to take an online course from a life coaching business in your province. Both the seminar format and online format are intensive. Seminars are generally held over a weekend from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M., while online courses require 16 hours' worth of training. Ensure that you take ample notes throughout the training, as you will be required to take a test at the end of the seminar or training.

      Pass the comprehension test that is given to you at the end of the seminar or online course to receive your life coaching certificate. At this time, a mentor will be provided to you for 12 months. This mentor is available online for you to discuss career opportunities and issues that you may have with clients.

      Decide whether or not you would like to start your own life coaching business or to join an existing company. If joining an existing company, research companies that offer life coaching and schedule a meeting with one of the life coaches.
