How to Set Up Wireless Broadband Through a USB Modem

How to Set Up Wireless Broadband Through a USB Modem thumbnail
Connect to the Internet with a USB modem.

Most wired modems connect to a computer through an Ethernet cable connection. However, some modems run off of a USB connection. This allows computers without an Ethernet connection (or computers that already have the connection occupied) to connect to the net. You can set up a wireless network router with a USB modem, just as you would with a DSL or cable modem.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the USB cable into one of the USB "Out" ports on the USB modem.

    • 2

Insert the opposite end of the cable into the USB port on the wireless router. You must use a wireless router that comes with a USB connection.

    • 3

Power on the USB modem and the wireless router.

    • 4

Look on the bottom of the wireless router. A full "HTTP" address is listed there. Type the exact router address (including the "HTTP") into the URL bar of your Internet browser. This brings you to the activation page for the wireless router.

Type in a username and password, then check off the kind of Internet source you are using (DSL or cable-based) and select "USB " as the connection method. Choose "Save" to save your settings.
