Setting up an Internet radio station is a great way to have a feel for radio broadcasting. There are a variety of ways of hosting online digital radio, many of which are free. You can set up an Internet radio station to broadcast music or chat shows. To broadcast online radio you will need a broadcast server provided online and various corresponding software for each broadcast server. You can create a free Internet radio station with either Peercast or SHOUTcast.

Instructions

  1. Setting Up an Internet Radio Station with SHOUTcast

      Download and install Winamp. This is the media player for which SHOUTcast has been designed.

      Download and install the SHOUTcast DNAS broadcaster, the SHOUTcast DSP Plug-In for Winamp, and SHOUTcast Transcoder from the SHOUTcast website.

      Navigate on your computer to "C:\Program Files\SHOUTcast" then double-click "sc_serv.exe."

      Open Winamp, click "File" then "Add to Library." Locate your music folder, select it and click "Add." Open the "Media Library" then drag files into the "Winamp Playlist."

      Click the Winamp toolbar, then click "Options" "Preferences." Click "DSP/Effect" under "Plug-ins" then select the "Nullsoft SHOUTcast" plug-in and click "Configure Active Plug-in."

      Click "Output" and make sure "Address" is set to "localhost" and "Port" is set to 8000. Click "Connect." Click "Play" and you will now be broadcasting your playlist to SHOUTcast. Go to Host-Comp IP to find out your "External IP." Distribute this address to your friends so they can listen to your online radio station.

    Setting Up an Internet Radio Station with Peercast

      Download and install Peercast, Oddcast Standalone DSP, Peercast2HTML and Winamp from the trustfm website.

      Right-click the Peercast icon in the task bar then click "Advanced" and "Settings." Set the "Port" to 7144, the "Password" to a chosen password, the "Max Relays" and "Max Direct Streams" to 2. Then click "Save Changes."

      Open Winamp, click "File" then "Add to Library." Locate your music folder, select it and click "Add." Open the "Media Library" then drag files into the "Winamp Playlist."

      Click the Winamp toolbar, then click "Options" "Preferences." Click "DSP/Effect" under "Plug-ins" then select the "oddCAST" plug-in and click "Configure Active Plug-in."

      Click "Config" then click "Icecast 2" under "Server Location." Change the "Server" to "localhost" and the port to "7144." Change your password to the password set in Peercast config.

      Click "Use Ogg Vorbis."

      Set the "Mount Point" to "/yourchannelname.ogg" replacing "yourchannelname" with your radio station's name. Click "OK."

      Click "Connect" and then click "Play" in Winamp. Your playlist will now begin playing. Go to Host-Comp IP to find out your "External IP." Distribute this address to your friends so they can listen to your online radio station.
