How to Regulate a Butane Lighter
Butane lighters provide greater reliability of the flame during breezy to windy conditions where matches may not be sufficient. These lighters come in both adjustable and non-adjustable models. Those which are adjustable and are disposable generally have a fuel adjustment lever at the top of the lighter near the flame. Adjustable butane lighters of the non-disposable type typically have a screwdriver slot in the outer jacket of the refueling port on the bottom edge.

1
Determine the type of butane lighter by visually inspecting the unit at the top and bottom. If the lighter is disposable yet adjustable, a small lever will be located near the top edge of the lighter near where the flame ignites. A refillable butane lighter typically has an outer adjustment jacket surrounding the refueling port on the bottom of the lighter.

2
Move the lever of a disposable butane lighter toward the plus (+) printed into the metal to increase the size of the flame, and toward the minus (-) to lower the flame.

3
Insert a small straight-edged screwdriver into the slot of the jacket surrounding the refueling port at the bottom of a refillable butane lighter. This will appear as a small nozzle in the center of a hole, with a metal jacket containing screwdriver slots around the nozzle. Rotate the jacket 1/4 turn at a time, left to increase the flame size and right to decrease it.

Tips & Warnings
Use only quarter turns if adjusting a refillable butane lighter. If the jacket is rotated too far to the left, the lighter may not light because there is too much fuel coming from the ignition nozzle. Likewise, if the jacket is rotated too far to the right, the lighter may not light because the flame is starved for fuel. This may require some experimentation to get the lighter adjusted to your liking.
