How to Build a Grape Vine Arch Trellis Design
Building a grapevine arch trellis is an inexpensive and simple way to add a bit of appeal to any yard. - 4 grapevine transplants
- Box of plant ties
- Shovel
- Soil
- 4 wooden beams
- 2 pounds of gravel
- Drill
- 12 screws

Building a Grapevine Arch Trellis

Dig four holes for the support posts. The holes should be evenly-spaced apart on an area that is flat and level. Each hole should be approximately 1.5 feet to two feet deep and a little smaller than the diameter of the support posts. The spacing of the four holes determines the size of the arch trellis, so for a larger trellis the holes need to be further apart from each other.

Pour 0.5 lbs. of gravel into each hole.

Stick each post into a hole. Cautiously turn each one clockwise until it works through the gravel and touches the bottom of the hole, securing it into place.

Drill three evenly-spaced holes on the front of each beam.

Insert an eye screw with a screw into each drilled hole of the post.

Pull the steel wire through the bottom row of drilled holes, then cut the wire and twist it around the top of a post, tightly securing it. Continue this process with each row of drilled holes, working up to the third row last. This process must be done with each row separately, as it forms the trellising section that makes the structure an arch trellis.

Cut off any sharp wire edges.

Plant a grapevine transplant at the bottom of each support post, facing outward from the arch trellis. According to GardenGuides.com, not all grape varieties call for the same planting method, but, generally, each grapevine transplant should be planted in a hole as deep as the root ball. Fill the hole back up with soil and tightly pack it around the base of the plant.

Gently tie the plant ties around the stems and vines of each plant up each post and onto the steel wires. This will help the plants to grow upward and around the arch trellis.
