DIY Audio Cable Kit

DIY Audio Cable Kit thumbnail
You can make your own audio cables.

When you're discussing audio cables for home audio/video equipment, you're almost always talking about one type of cable--the RCA patch cable. This cable features a male RCA plug on either end, attached to a two-conductor insulated cable. These audio cables are very common and easy to obtain. But if you want to make your own cable for a specific purpose, you can do it yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • Two-conductor insulated wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Wire strippers
  • Two male RCA plugs
  • Soldering iron
  • Rosin core solder

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a length of wire for your cable. The length depends on how long a cable you want, although it's wise to add a few inches of length onto the wire to account for any cutting you need to do.

    • 2

Remove 1/2 inch of insulation from each of the conductors of your wire, on both ends of the wire.

    • 3

Remove the jacket from one of your RCA plugs. Slide the jacket over the end of the wire.

    • 4

Solder the wires on the end of your wire to the RCA plug. Solder one wire to the center post at the back of the plug, and the other wire to the outer tab on the back of the plug.

    • 5

Slide the jacket of the plug over the solder connections and screw it onto the RCA plug.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 3 through 5 with the other end of the wire.
