Rust in the bathtub results from different sources. The rust could develop because you left a metal object on a wet surface of the bathtub, or perhaps high iron content exists in the water supply you use. Whatever the reason, you don't have to accept the rust stains. Instead, you can implement a system of trial and error to remove the stains and restore your tub's surface.
Things You'll Need
- 1 cup borax
- 1/2 cup lemon juice
- Small container
- Non-abrasive sponge
- Nylon scrubbing pad
- Salt dispenser
Pour 1 cup of borax into a small container. Add 1/2 cup of lemon juice and stir with a spoon to make a paste.
Dip a non-abrasive sponge in the lemon juice and borax paste and wipe it onto the rust stains in the bathtub. Allow the paste to remain on the stains for approximately 30 minutes.
Scrub the stains with a nylon scrubbing sponge to remove. Rinse the bathtub with water to remove cleaner residue.
Sprinkle salt onto the rust stains to coat.
Slice a lime in half and squeeze the juice on top of the salted area to saturate. Allow the salt and lime to remain on the stain for 2 to 3 hours.
Scrub the area with the remaining lime rind to remove the stains. Rinse thoroughly with water to remove any residue.
Tips & Warnings
- The salt and lime cleansing method works best on flat, rust-stained surfaces so that the salt and lime will not fall or drip.
