How to Clean Reed Diffuser Oil Off Carpet

Remove diffuser oil from your carpet with a dry-cleaning solution.

Reed diffusers release pleasant fragrances into the air using oil, an oil container and reeds. Unlike candles, which must be lit and blown out, reed diffusers require no extra effort after you set them up. Unfortunately, you must remove the lid of the oil container to accommodate the reeds. If the container is accidentally hit, the oil spills out, staining upholstery and carpet. Quickly removing the oil from your carpet is essential to prevent a permanent stain.

• White paper towels Dry-cleaning solvent Clean rags Grease-cutting dish soap Sponge Fan

Instructions

1. Blot diffuser oil from your carpet as soon as possible with white paper towels. Avoid pressing the paper towels into the carpet as this only pushes the oil deeper into the carpet fibers.

2. Pour a small amount of dry-cleaning solvent on a clean rag. Dab at the oil stain, starting at one edge and working towards the center. This keeps the stain from spreading. As you lift the stain onto the rag, expose a clean area of the rag, and pour additional dry-cleaning solvent on the rag. Continue lifting the oil from the carpet until no more oil is being transferred to the rag.

3. Mix 1 tablespoon of grease-cutting dish soap into a sink of warm water. Place a sponge in the liquid, and squeeze out the excess water. Blot the soapy sponge onto any oil left on the carpet. Rinse the sponge in the soapy water, and continue blotting the stain until it's lifted from the carpet.

4. Rinse the sponge and dab it on the carpet to remove any soap residue. Press clean rags into the carpet to absorb excess water. Point a fan towards the wet area to speed up the drying time.
