How to Make a Rustic Garden Trellis
Gardeners use trellises to support vertical growing plants in the garden. Vegetables such as peas grow on trellises, as well as edible flowers, such as climbing varieties of nasturtium. A rustic garden trellis is ideal for a country or cottage garden. Although you could purchase a rustic trellis from a garden center, one can be made with a few basic materials. Make a rustic trellis out of found branches in the yard and garden twine. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 8-foot branches, 4
- 4-foot branches, 6
- Garden twine
- Knife
- Post hole digger

Place the four 8-foot branches parallel to each other on the ground. Space each branch approximately 1 foot apart.

Lay the 4-foot branches perpendicular across the 8-foot branches. Start at the top of the branch and space evenly every 12 inches. The bottom 24 inches of the four vertical branches will be buried in the ground.

Tie off each joint where the branches intersect with twine. Trim off any excess twine.

Select a spot in the garden for the trellis. Dig four 2-foot-deep holes along the selected space. Space the holes approximately 1 foot apart.

Place the four vertical branches of the trellis into the holes. Fill the dirt in around the branches with your hands. Pack the soil around the branches with your feet.

Prepare a planting area in front of the trellis with a spade fork. Turn the soil over and loosen it up for planting when the time comes.

Tips & Warnings
Train vertical growing plants as they begin to grow up the trellis by tying them loosely to the branches. Over time, the vines will attach themselves to the branches.
Be sure to pack the soil around the trellis verticals to prevent it from tipping over.
