How to Power Wash a Wood Deck
Even though wood decks experience a great deal of abuse from the weather and outdoor elements, most deck issues are cosmetic. Since decking is made of durable woods which have a natural resistance to decay, few problems arise with decks except those caused by dirt and debris. Power washers provide an easy, powerful tool to cleaning up dirt, mold and debris on wood decks–a chore that you can complete within an afternoon. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Power washer (3,000 psi) with a 40-degree fan tip
- Pump sprayer (2-gallon) with fan tip
- Deck cleaner

Practice spraying a driveway before using the power washer on a deck. Move its wand in a continuous motion in long, consistent motion until you feel comfortable controlling the water.

Spray the deck with the power washer held 18 inches from the decking. Spray the deck evenly and move the wand in a back and forth motion to cover every part.

Apply a deck cleaner, available from most home improvement stores, evenly to all parts of the decking with the pump sprayer. Let the cleaner sit for about 10 minutes after applying. Follow the directions provided with the cleaner for specific mixing and application instructions.

Hold the power washer wand perpendicular and 4 to 6 inches away from the board gaps and spray in long, overlapping strokes to wash away mold and debris between boards.

Hold the power washer 18 inches from the railing wood, align the fan tip with the deck gaps and spray starting at the tops of the railings and working down.

Spray the entire deck surface two to three times to adequately remove dirt, debris and mold.

Tips & Warnings
Protect your feet and legs with boots and pants when using a power washer.
If the power washer is adjustable, set its pressure to 3,000 psi.
