How to Improve Communication & Training
Effective communications and training in the workplace is critical for success in today’s ever changing business environment. Yet many people and companies struggle with these skills. Communicating well and training others takes time and effort. The easiest way to improve communication and training is to understand the skills needed for both. Once an understanding of the skills has been acquired, practice is needed to incorporate the skills into your everyday behavior.

Improve Communications
-
1
Understand that communicating well with others is more than the ability to speak well. You must also be able to listen effectively, exchange ideas, understand others, encourage others to understand your point of view, and negotiate solutions.
-
2
Acquire an awareness of emotions in communications. When communications around sensitive subjects become difficult, many people become emotional. They may display unpleasant emotions such as anger or defensiveness. Good communicators understand that these emotions are not about them but about the subject and the person who is having the emotion.
-
-
3
Remain neutral when emotions come into play in order to have the most effective communications and resolutions to the problem.
-
4
Offer your point of view and your ideas but be willing to accept the viewpoints of others as well. No one has all the answers and someone else may have a better idea. Be willing to admit that you don’t have all the answers.
-
5
Listen to others and focus on the facts at hands. People want to be heard and they will be more inclined to hear what you have to say if they think they are being listened to. Repeat what you have heard in your own words to show you are listening and to check and make sure that you understand.
Improve Training
-
6
Decide what issues need to be addressed and what potential solutions there are to address them.
-
7
Develop a training program specific to the challenges at hand. People don’t like to waste time in training programs that are not specific to their needs or that don't teach the skills they need to accomplish the tasks at hand.
-
8
Be clear about the purpose of the training program, what people will get out of it, and how they can use the skills in their jobs.
-
9
Have a guide for the program and reference materials for people to refresh their memories of the lessons and skills taught when the program is complete.
-
10
Give participants the time to ask questions and practice. People like to be involved in training programs. Training programs that only lecture at participants and tell them what to do will not be as valuable as creating an interactive program.
