How to Thread a Kenmore 16 Stitch Sewing Machine

The Kenmore 16-stitch sewing machine isn't quite an antique. Though designed as a home sewing machine, the Kenmore proved itself capable of handling sturdier fabrics like number-three cotton canvas or synthetic polyester fabric for sails or canopies. The Kenmore 16 made it possible to work on projects that were once thought of unlikely candidates for any sewing machine other than those driven by a foot treadle. Threading the Kenmore 16-stitch sewing machine is no more awkward nor complicated than threading any other sewing machine.

Instructions

    • 1

Carry the thread from the spool atop the machine along the horizontal arm to the wire guide on top of the horizontal arm, at the slot that runs down the side of the machine, between the horizontal arm and the sewing head. Use the wire guide to turn the thread downward so it lays in the slot.

    • 2

Pull the thread downward from the round opening at the bottom of the slot, and wrap the thread clockwise around the bottom of the needle thread tension adjustment knob. When the thread reaches the floating wire tensioner on the left side of the knob, hook the thread through the floating wire tensioner.

    • 3

Lead the thread from the floating wire tensioner, and hook the thread into the thread take-up lever at the top front of the sewing head. From the thread take-up lever, lead the thread downward to the thread clip at the bottom front of the sewing head. Hook the thread through the thread guide at that point.

    • 4

Carry the thread from the thread guide on the sewing head to the needle thread clip on the needle bar, hooking the thread into the thread clip. Carry the thread downward to the needle and thread the needle.

Tips & Warnings

  • Watch your fingers--be sure the machine is "off" while threading the needle.
