Be in charge of your backyard.

Living in a home can come with a few conflicts, some related to neighbors. If one of your neighborly issues is children taking a swim in your pool without permission, handle the situation with as much grace as possible to avoid unnecessary conflict. Fortunately, as a homeowner, you're completely in the right whatever you choose, but you'll want to keep in mind that there is probably a way to handle this conflict without too much drama.

Instructions

    • 1

Speak with your neighbors. Ideally, have a talk with the children who have tried to swim in your pool without permission and their parents at the same time. This will reinforce the idea that the children must ask permission and that both you and their parents are in agreement about this issue. Be clear that using your pool is a privilege and not a right.

    • 2

Clearly state your expectations. If you are against the children ever swimming in the pool, be firm that your rule must be obeyed. If you are willing to have the children over with your permission, be clear and state the terms of this agreement: for example, that the children must ask you at least a day in advance and you must be available to supervise them.

    • 3

Enforce your rules. If you see the slightest bend in your rule, take action immediately. If you come home to find that your pool has been used, don't brush it off and ignore the situation. Go over to your neighbor's house immediately and address the issue with the children and their parents--first finding out who the guilty party is. Your home is private property and in addition to your broken agreement, there is a safety liability.

Tips & Warnings

  • Put up a fence and gate around your pool. This won't necessarily discourage anyone who is determined to take a swim, but if there are children or pets running around nearby a gate can help make your backyard safer.
