Study the book in depth in order to write a good synopsis.

When you decide you want to write a synopsis of a non-fiction book, the first thing you need to remember is that a synopsis is different than a summary, and in a synopsis you need to give the reader much more information. A synopsis is essentially a longer and more detailed summary that provides all the main events of the non-fiction book from start until finish.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the main events of the story. Break down the different chapters of the book and write a few sentences about each chapter. Write your narrative using the third person and present tense. Make sure to keep the same style and tone of the book in your synopsis to give your reader the feel of the actual book and give him a clear idea of what he should expect.

As in fiction, there may be an significant conflict in a nonfiction book. If so, present this conflict and tell the reader how it resolved. If it is a biography, a historical book about a war or culture, let the reader know why this particular book theme is important and how it relates to him.

Talk about the context, benefits and problems of the book. A work of nonfiction always has a concept behind its main idea. Identify the hidden meaning, what it is that this book has to offer and why it was written. Discuss whether the book helps the reader solve a problem and of what benefit it is. Consider why this book is unique and compare it to similar books. The synopsis can be a very important selling tool so make sure it does the book justice.

Format and review your synopsis. There are different guidelines that publishers specify, but usually a nonfiction book synopsis is about ten pages long. Read your synopsis out loud and imagine you haven't read the book. If it gives you a very clear idea of what the book is about and the main events from start until finish, then your synopsis is complete.
