How to Draw Palm Trees

How to Draw Palm Trees thumbnail
Draw palm trees by using basic shapes.

Palm trees have leaves protruding only from the top of the trunk rather than the whole trunk, like most trees. When drawing a palm tree, it is important to break the tree down into basic shapes first, then add in the details and erase the excess lines last. When drawing a palm tree, add your own personal touch by adding coconuts, a different amount of leaves or making the tree trunks lean.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a wide oval in the middle of your paper using a pencil. Draw a line from the bottom of the oval straight down about 4 inches. These lines will be the base to your palm-tree shape.

    • 2

Draw a small dot in the middle of the oval, then draw five lines coming out from the dot. The lines should be evenly spaced out in a star shape, and should go about half an inch to an inch outside of the oval. These lines will be the inside of each palm leaf.

    • 3

Draw large ovals that go around each line. The ovals should be longer than they are wide, and they should end right after the lines to create the leaves. Make each oval have a pointed end rather than a round one.

    • 4

Erase parts of the sides of the ovals, and replace them with lines that are wavy or have a zigzag shape to them to look more realistic. Palm tree leaves often endure harsh weather that can cause them to tear slightly and have a rustic texture. Erase the original oval that you based your leaves on.

    • 5

Draw a rectangle around the line that came from the bottom of the original oval. The rectangle should only be about a half an inch thick. Erase the original line and draw small horizontal lines in the new tree trunk every inch or three-fourths of an inch.

    • 6

Shade areas of the trunk that the leaf would shadow in real life, and shade the centers of the leaves. Repeat steps 1 through 5 for multiple palm trees. Erase the parts of the tress that go behind other trees, and shade areas that would be shaded by the trees in the front. Trace your finished trees in pen.
