How to Apply for a Tax ID Number in New Hampshire

If you are doing business in New Hampshire, you are required to register the name of your business with New Hampshire's Secretary of State. Registering your name won't enable you to file taxes with the state, though; for that you must have an Employer Identification Number (EIN), a nine-digit tax identification number issued by the Internal Revenue Service. The EIN will serve as your tax ID number for New Hampshire state tax purposes.

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) EIN Assistant Web site (see References).

    • 2

      Click on "Begin Application."

    • 3

Select the type of business you have. For example, click on the "Partnerships" radio button if your business is a partnership.

    • 4

      Click on the "Continue" button.

    • 5

Complete the interview questions. You'll be asked information about you and your business. When you have finished the application, you'll be issued an EIN immediately via a PDF document.
