All GFI outlets should be tested at least once per year.

A GFI or GFCI, ground fault circuit interrupter, is an outlet that provides a greater measure of safety against an electric shock. GFIs are required by most building codes in areas where an increased risk of electric shock exists. These areas are outdoors, near swimming pools, in bathrooms, in kitchens and garages. A GFI outlet will disconnect the electrical circuit if the sensor inside detects any issue. Once the GFI has broken the circuit, you will have to reset the GFI for the outlet, and possibly other nearby outlets, to function. Does this Spark an idea?

      Locate the GFI outlet in the area where your outlets are not working. A GFI outlet has two buttons. One will say "Test" and the other "Reset."

      Press the "Reset" button. Check the outlet that was not working and see if this has restored the electricity to the outlet. If it has not, continue to look around the room for the next GFI outlet.

      Repeat the process until you find the GFI that disconnected the circuit. Check utside outlets or outlets in the garage area. If pressing "Reset" does not restore electricity, consult an electrician or replace the entire GFI outlet.
