How to Create a Doll House
Making your own doll house is not as difficult as you might expect. If your home hardware center is willing to help you make most of the cuts from your plywood that will make the process a lot easier. There are many doll house kits on the market and buying and assembling a doll house from a kit is an option, but making it yourself allows you to design the house exactly as you want it to look. Use this as a basic guide for a basic house, but don't be afraid to change the measurements, add floors and let your imagination soar to create the doll house of your dreams.
Things You'll Need
- 1/4 inch thick plywood, 14 feet by 8 feet
- Staircase
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Jigsaw
- Drill
- Wood Glue
- Nails, 3/4-inch
- Hammer
- 10 small hinges (for roof and front opening)
Instructions
-
Cutting the Wood
-
1
Cut your plywood into the following size pieces: two 16 inches by 30 inches (floors), one 15 7/8 inches by 30 inches (middle floor), two 12 1/2 inches by 31 inches (roof), two 18 1/4 inches by 30 1/2 inches ( front and back), two 16 inches by 28 inches (gabled ends).
-
2
Cut out two 8-inch triangles from the two gabled end pieces, to make a point for the gabled sides of the house on top of which the roof will sit.
-
-
3
Cut a 6 by 2 7/8 inch rectangle from the center edge of one of the long sides of the middle floor (15 7/8 inch by 30 inch) piece of wood. This is the hole for the staircase.
-
4
Cut four windows out of the two gabled end pieces.
-
5
Cut five windows and one door from the front piece of the doll house, and match up the front piece to the back piece of wood. Cut out six identical windows (replacing the door with a window) for the back of the house.
Assembling
-
6
Attach gabled ends to bottom floor with nails and wood glue.
-
7
Attach middle floor piece, then top floor piece using wood glue and driving nails in from the outside of the two gabled ends.
-
8
Slide in the staircase and glue to bottom floor and to sides of middle floor opening to secure into place.
-
9
Attach back of house and back of roof (12 1/2 inches by 31 inches) using nails and wood glue.
-
10
Attach front part of roof to back part of roof (that is already glued into place) with four small hinges.
-
11
Cut front of the house into two pieces: 16 inches by 11 inches and 16 inches by 19 1/2 inches. Attach one side of each piece to the front sides of the dollhouse using small hinges, three hinges on each side.
-
12
Finish your doll house by adding small pieces of plywood to divide each floor into rooms, by adding a door, windows, a chimney, carpeting, wall paper, staining the floors and painting the exterior.
