Your gross yearly salary is your annual salary before any deductions for taxes, insurance or other purposes are removed from your check. Your employer will give you a W-2 form at the end of the year listing the gross yearly salary that you have earned, as well as a breakdown of all your deductions separated into categories for Social Security and state, local and federal taxes. If you need to figure out your gross salary prior to receiving your W-2, you can do it by extrapolating from the figures on your pay stub.

      Examine your pay stub to see what your gross pay was for a recent pay period. This will likely be a larger number that the actual amount of your check and should be clearly marked "gross pay" or "gross wages earned." If your wage varies from pay period to pay period, take an average across several pay periods for better accuracy.

      Figure out how many pay periods your employer has in a year. For weekly pay, there are 52 pay periods, bi-weekly is 26 pay periods, semi-monthly is 24 pay periods and monthly pay is 12 pay periods.

      Multiply your gross wage for a pay period by the number of pay periods in a year to get your gross yearly salary. For example, if you are paid $900 and your employer has bi-weekly pay, your gross yearly salary would be $23,400.
