How to Troubleshoot Problems Installing a Dell Keyboard USB Hub

A USB hub is a type of device that allows you to turn one USB port on your computer into many. The hub plugs into a regular USB port and itself has several USB inputs on it. This way, if you have a limited number of USB hubs on your computer, you increase the number of devices you can connect to your computer via USB. If you're having a hard time installing a Dell USB keyboard with your USB hub, you must find the problem before you can continue.

Instructions

Double-check your connections. Your USB hub must be connected securely to a USB port on your computer. Likewise, your Dell keyboard needs to be securely connected to one of the USB inputs on your hub. Unplug everything, and then plug everything back in and see if that doesn't fix your connection problems.

Restart your computer. Some USB ports on your computer will be automatically disabled if a device isn't plugged into them during Windows boot. Restart your computer with the USB hub connected (and by proxy, the Dell keyboard connected to the USB hub) and see if that doesn't fix your connection problems.

Install any necessary driver software for your USB hub. Most USB hubs are plug and play, which means all you have to do to get them to work is plug them in. Other USB hubs will require that you install specific software onto your computer to get them to work. If your USB hub came with a CD-ROM, install the software on the CD-ROM and try to use your Dell keyboard again.

Make sure your USB hub is "on." Certain USB hubs will have an "on/off" switch, while others will not. Obviously, your USB hub needs to be "on" in order for you to use the devices that are connected to it on your computer. Check to make sure the device is on and then try to use your Dell keyboard again.
