How to Design Men's Bedrooms
Designing a man’s bedroom is sometimes challenging, especially when he isn’t really into style and home décor and doesn't give you many ideas upon which to build. There are ways, however, to tap into the man’s interests and personal tastes. Knowledge of his interests and tastes will give you a foundation and the ability to create a room that he finds comfortable, inviting and personalized just for him. Does this Spark an idea?

Go into his closet. Take note of what colors and patterns he wears the most. The colors will provide you with an overall palette for the room. The patterns will help you when choosing furnishings.

Ask him what his interests are. If you can’t get much out of him, hang out with him for a while or ask his friends and family to find out. This will give you more ideas for furnishings as well as ideas for art work.

Paint the walls a color based on the color tastes you discovered in his wardrobe. Paint the trim a lighter or darker shade of that color.

Select furniture styles for the bed, bed stand, lamps, chair and dresser based on his personal interests. For example if he is an avid outdoorsman, use rich, rustic wood furniture. If he is a hipster who loves urban, contemporary culture, use modern furniture that incorporates industrial materials like metal. If he is interested in history, use antiques. If he travels a lot, find out his favorite destination and choose furnishings that are in the style of that place's culture. Choose upholstery, bedding and curtain colors and patterns based on color and pattern tastes found in his wardrobe. Patterns might include stripes, paisley, plaid or even Hawaiian. If you saw mostly plain clothing, use items that are non-patterned.

Decorate the room with art work based on his personal tastes. For example, if he is into sports, you might include framed prints of historic sports figures such as Muhammad Ali and Babe Ruth, or images of famous sports sites like Yankee Stadium. If he is into music, include framed posters of his favorite bands or framed album covers.

Include extra amenities that suit his personality. If he likes television and movies, include a TV. If he is the romantic type, include a dimmer on the light switch, a music player and scented candles. Fish tanks are also often welcome additions to a man’s room. Don't forget necessities like a hamper and a mirror.

Lay out the elements based on his personality. If he is a highly organized, regimented person, create a symmetrical layout where one side of the room mirrors the other side. If he is more eclectic, create a more random, asymmetrical layout. Consider how elements relate to each other proportionally--items often look better in groups rather than being evenly spaced apart--and think of the bed as the anchor.
