How to Lock a Bike with a U-lock

How to Lock a Bike with a U-lockthumbnail
Lock a bike with a U-lock to secure it.

When you must leave your bicycle unattended, instead of tempting a would-be thief with an unlocked bike, lock your bike with a U-lock to keep it safe and secure while you are gone. A U-lock can keep your bike effectively secure with a U-shaped shackle that fits snugly around the integral parts of your bicycle. Select a U-lock with thick steel components to provide the greatest security when you secure your bike.

    Instructions

      • 1

Find a thin, vertical, immovable object to which you can lock your bike. A bike rack, signpost or parking meter would be ideal.

      • 2

Remove the front wheel from your bike, if possible. Many bikes have a quick-release mechanism that enables you to easily remove it.

      • 3

Position your bike so the post of your bike rests against the vertical object. Place your front wheel on the ground near your rear wheel.

      • 4

Open your U-lock, and insert its open ends around the immovable object and through and around the back wheel tire, the front wheel tire and the center post of your bike.

      • 5

Lock the U-lock securely so both wheels and the bike post are all secured to the immovable object.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Consider removing your bicycle seat and taking it with you if you think someone may take it.

    • If you secure only one wheel, a thief may remove it, taking your bike and leaving behind the locked-up wheel. It best to secure the frame and both wheels to discourage this.
