How to Fix a Scratched DVD Disc
You can fix a scratched DVD with one or more cleaning agents that are probably already in your home. Armed with these common household supplies, along with a bit of determination and "elbow grease," you can remove, or at least decrease the severity of, the scratch to make the DVD playable again.
Things You'll Need
- Lint-free cloths (such as eyeglass or microfiber cloth) Brasso Car wax Isopropyl alcohol

1
Hold the DVD around the edge and inspect the surface for any grime. Even if you notice only a few particles of dust, you should clean it. Simply dampen a soft, lint-free cloth with some warm water and wipe the DVD clean. Start at the inner ring and wipe outward in a straight line. Clean the entire shiny surface of the DVD in this manner.

2
Allow the DVD to air dry. In the meantime, gather your Brasso, car wax and a few more lint-free cloths.

3
Place a small drop of Brasso on a clean cloth and buff the scratch on the DVD. If the entire surface of the DVD is scratched, buff the whole surface. Again, start at the center of the DVD and buff outward in a straight line, rubbing gently as you go. If you’re only repairing one scratch, focus on that area.

4
Dampen a clean cloth with some isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and clean the entire shiny surface of the DVD. Once again, use the same strokes, working from the center to the outer edge. Then rinse the DVD in cold, running water and let it air dry.

5
Place a small amount of car wax (either liquid or paste) onto another clean, soft cloth and spread it over the whole surface of the DVD. Apply it starting from the inside and working out. Allow the wax time to dry on the surface and then wipe the DVD clean with a separate cloth.
-
6
Insert the DVD into a DVD player and see if it plays. If not, repeat the process. It may take several attempts to polish out the scratch completely and make the DVD playable.
