How to Knit With Polar Fleece
If you want to knit something extra cozy this winter, consider knitting with polar fleece instead of traditional yarn. Polar fleece actually comes in yarn form, but you can also make your own polar fleece yarn to knit with. Purchase polar fleece at your local fabric store and turn it into a fresh new knitting material. Polar fleece yarn is bulky, so it will require a simple pattern and large needles. You will need a basic understanding of knitting to learn how to knit with polar fleece.

Cut strips from your polar fleece fabric. Each strip needs to be approximately 1/2 inch wide; the length will be determined by the length of fabric you started with.

Fold the ends of two strips over by two inches and make a cut into the fold. Avoid cutting all the way to the edge. Pull strip B through the hole in strip A; then pull the opposite end of strip B through its own slit and tighten gently. Now you have joined two strips; do this with the remaining strips of polar fleece in order to make yarn.

Cast on the desired number of stitches. You will need large knitting needles, approximately size US 15 or higher. For a scarf you can cast on anywhere from 10 to 20 stitches; for a shawl or blanket you will need to add more stitches, but remember you will need very large needles to make anything too wide.

Knit back and forth on every row to make a garter stitch pattern. The bulkiness of the polar fleece means that you will not be able to see clear stitch definitions if you try to use a complicated stitch pattern, so for ease and speed garter stitch is best when you knit with polar fleece.

Bind off your work. Add polar fleece fringe to the ends of your piece if you desire to give it a finished look. To do this, cut strips of fleece that are 1/2 inch wide by six inches long. Fold them in half and push the fold through the edge of your knitted piece, then pull the ends through the folded loop to make a fringe. Repeat this all along the edge of your piece.
