How to Make Microsoft Office Document Imaging Read Japanese

Microsoft Document Imaging is a software application for scanning and creating electronic documents that is included on the Office 2003 and 2007 installation CDs. Microsoft Document Imaging is not installed with the default installation of Microsoft Office and must be installed as an extra “Office Tool” using the CD. Microsoft Document Imaging scans and performs optical character recognition (OCR) using the language used by the operating system. To force Microsoft Document Imaging to use another language such as Japanese when performing OCR on a document, just a few settings need to be adjusted in the application.

Instructions

1. Ensure the scanner is connected to the computer and open the Microsoft Document Imaging application.

2. Place the document to be scanned face down on the scanner bed and close the scanner lid.

3. Click the “File” option and then click “Scan New Document” from the top menu in Microsoft Document Imaging.

4. Select the preset to use. Several presets are provided by default or create a new preset for the Japanese language.

5. Click “Preset Options” on the Preset Settings page. To create a new preset, click the “Create New Preset” option. Click the “OK” button. To edit an existing preset to include the Japanese language, click “Edit Selected Preset.”

6. Click the tab labeled “Processing.”

7. Click the “OCR Language” drop-down list and select “Japanese” from the list.

8. Click the “OK” button.

9. Click the “Scan” button to scan the document.

10. Click “Done” to finish the scan and save the document.
