Reporting lost items in a taxi must be completed in a timely manner for best results.

Losing your wallet in a D.C. taxi can cause an enormous amount of stress. Regardless of whether you are searching for your lost wallet or reporting a wallet that you have found in a taxi, D.C. has a superb lost and found system to assist you.

Instructions

    • 1

Call the taxi phone number that you used when first requesting a taxi. Notify the dispatcher that you want to report a lost wallet. The dispatcher will know who is on duty for the different times and days of the week and can determine the taxi number to process your request.

Contact the DC taxi cab commission at 202-645-6020 and notify a representative that you want to report a lost wallet. You will need to give your phone number, name, the date and time when the wallet was lost or found and some details about the wallet to identify it, such as any markings on it or torn material. Money and identification cards may not be in the wallet, therefore giving a description of the outside, color or unique features is better.

Make a copy of your taxi receipt using high resolution and fax the receipt to the taxi commissions fax number at 202-889-3604. Doing this will provide evidence of your recent taxi ride and will lend clues as to who drove the taxi, the taxi number and possibly the license plate number and the other possible patrons' phone numbers who also rode in the taxi on that day. If you were the person to find the wallet, be sure to take it to the taxi cab commission or if you cannot, notify a representative of the address where the wallet is located and can be picked up. If you lost the wallet, the taxi cab commission will contact you by phone should the wallet be turned in. You will need to bring a picture identification to pick it up or send a prepaid envelope to have it shipped to you.
