How to Choose the Right Size Bowling Ball

Many amateur bowlers can improve their game by selecting the right bowling ball. A bowler can select the right sized ball based on a predetermined formula. This formula is not set in stone and is open to variations based on the bowler's personal preferences and strength. Other factors to consider when choosing the right ball is whether to use a ball that is made of materials such as urethane or particle. This formula should just be used as a guideline for finding the right ball.

  • Select the right size ball for someone 15 years old and up. The first step to selecting the right bowling ball is to know the person's total body weight. Divide the total body weight by 10. Many pro shops recommend a bowler use a ball that is 1/10 their own weight. For example, a man that weighs 200 pounds may prefer a 20-pound ball.

  • Select the right size ball for someone 6 to 14 years old. Find a ball whose weight matches the child's age. Usually a six year old child can handle a six-pound ball. If the child is really strong for his age, consider trying a ball that is a couple pounds heavier.

  • Choose the right finger grip. A ball that is the correct weight may not be the most comfortable if it has the wrong finger grip. There is a conventional grip ball and a fingertip grip ball. The conventional grip has holes that are drilled deep enough for the second knuckle on the fingers to fit into each hole. Conventional grip allows the ball to roll down the lane with little or no curve. Fingertip grip holes are shorter in depth, only the first knuckle on the fingers can fit down into each hole. But fingertip grips allow the bowler to throw the ball with more power and add some spin to the bowl.

  • Pay attention to the way your body feels after bowling. Any pain in the wrist or shoulders could mean that the ball is too heavy. Even if the ball is 1/10 your body weight, your own personal strength may require that you use a lighter ball. Try many different weights until you find a ball that does not cause any discomfort.
