How to Use Oil Pastels for Kids
Use oil pastels to create singular pieces of art that demonstrate your ability to blend colors. Oil pastels are made from colored pigments and are held together with oils and waxes, allowing them to be blended and smoothed together. You can also use oil pastels with other materials, such as watercolor paints, to create one-of-a-kind pieces of art.
Instructions

Oil Pastel Artwork
-
1
Sketch your drawing using a pencil on a sheet of white paper.
-
2
Determine which areas of your drawing will be blended oil pastels or areas filled with lines.
-
-
3
Draw the outlines of the sketch with the oil pastels. It is important to press heavily.
-
4
Color in the artwork with oil pastels.
-
5
Blend the areas of the drawing by using the sides of the oil pastels. Using the sides of the oil pastels will also help cover more areas of the artwork.
-
6
Layer colors on top of each other to create blended colors.
-
7
Smooth the oil pastels together with your finger or a paper towel. Because the pastels include oil, they will smooth together to look like a painting.
-
8
Use single colors to add strong lines or details. Press hard with oil pastels to make the colors stand out on top of the blended colors. To make the lines stand out, use a lighter color oil pastel next to the details and lines.
Watercolor Resist with Oil Pastels
-
9
Create a light sketch of your own design on a sheet of paper.
-
10
Draw over the sketch with oil pastels to create an outline.
-
11
Paint over the oil pastels with watercolor paints. Because the oil pastels contain oil, they will pop through the watercolor paint, revealing the outline.
