How to Fix a Maytag Washer Tub
Maytag machines are infamous for leaking washer tubs. This happens when the basket on a washer becomes improperly balanced due to unbalanced washloads. Over time, the basket hits the tub so often that it wears a hole in the tub. That hole begins leaking water under the washing machine. Thankfully, the washer tub can be patched using a washtub seam repair kit, available at any Maytag parts store. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Screwdriver
- Spanner wrench
- Flashlight
- Rag
- Dish soap
- Steel wool
- Seam repair kit
- Hand roller
Instructions
-
-
1
Unplug the machine and close off the water valves.
-
2
Remove the agitator by pulling it up off the rubber snap ring. You will feel a snap as it comes loose.
-
-
3
Loosen the tub crown clamp by unscrewing the clamp’s tightening screw. The tub crown clamp is located over the top of the tub. Pull the tub crown up and out of the machine.
-
4
Remove the spanner nut and the washer from the bottom of the tub with a spanner wrench. Spanner wrenches are available at your parts store. On Maytag machines, the spanner nut has a left-handed thread, so turn the spanner to the right to remove it.
-
5
Lift out the basket from the washing machine and set it aside.
-
6
Locate the hole in the tub with a flashlight.
-
7
Clean the area around the hole with a rag dampened with dish soap and water.
-
8
Create texture around the hole by rubbing the hole with steel wool until you see scratches forming. The texture ensures a firm bond.
-
9
Place the hole patch over the hole with the sticky side toward the tub wall.
-
10
Press out any bubbles from underneath the patch with a hand roller.
-
11
Reassemble the washing machine, but wait on running any loads for at least 24 hours to provide enough time for the patch to dry.
