Designing a luxury swimming pool is a designer's treat.

When designing a luxury pool, finances are probably not a worry, so let your imagination run wild and spare no expense. Whether you are designing a pool for yourself or for someone else, there are certain things that set a luxury pool apart from an ordinary swimming pool; design features such as waterfalls or fountains, specialty tiles or the allure of a vanishing edge all give a touch of luxury. Does this Spark an idea?

Consider the site of the pool. The surrounding landscape is important to the design of a luxury pool. If there is a vast, expansive view, then a vanishing edge overlooking the view is one way to celebrate the vista. If there is a built-up area around the pool site, then this lends itself well to waterfalls and grottoes. The site is also important for the size of the pool -- bigger is usually better, but a luxury pool can still be luxurious and small.

Decide on the shape of the pool. If the surrounding area is very modern and structured, then a structured rectangular pool will complement the feel of the property -- think Roman bath, with steps all around. If the property is more of a tropical haven, then a natural-form pool with rounded edges and eddies may fit the landscape better; these kinds of properties will almost certainly profit from a natural-looking waterfall cascading into the pool. If there is a form particularly special to the property owner, such as a shamrock if they're Irish, or even a heart or key, then a luxury pool designer will not shy away from shaping the pool this way. Artist Allan Rodewald's pool is shaped like an artist's palette.

Discover new lining designs. The bottom and sides of a pool can say as much for luxury as the shape and size. A Moroccan mosaic on the bottom of the pool or a Greek border on the sides will add an exotic touch of luxury. Ceramic tile work in any design is a luxury feature.

Choose the luxurious additions to the pool. These can include fountains, waterslides, whirlpools or hot tubs, heating if the property is in a cooler climate, underwater lighting, wave machines, islands, in-pool bars or even an ornate bridge over the pool. If there is enough space available, then an artificial lagoon or reef complete with exotic fish is the ultimate in luxury pools.
