Drawing someone as a cartoon character is an effective way to express your affection by memorializing them with a humorous caricature. The process requires close analysis of a person’s face so that you can identify the facial features that lend themselves most easily to visual imitation. By learning to see the most basic elements of shape, you can learn to capture them in a cartoon.
Things You'll Need
Identify the five shapes of the person’s face you wish to draw. The shapes that require recreation are the head, each eye, the nose and the mouth. Capturing these five shapes is essential for maintaining accurate cartoon representation of a person.
Identify the dominant shape of the person’s face. For some people it will be the nose as with Jimmy Durante or Ed O’Neill. For others it will be the mouth as with Angelina Jolie or Tom Cruise.
Sketch the head of the person you wish to draw as a cartoon character, beginning with the dominant facial shape. You should repeat this process until you are confident the shapes match the person accurately.
Add facial details to the face such as nostrils, pupils, teeth, ears and hair shape.
Erase all extraneous lines from the initial five shapes that are not naturally a part of the face. These may include lines connecting the tip of the nose to the bridge, the line signifying the top of the head or the line of the head shape separating the ears.
Add details such as shading, facial lines, strands of hair, eye lashes, eyebrows and facial accessories.
