How Do I Play Games on DS With an R4 Card?

A DS R4 card contains a Micro SD flash memory card that allows a player to store games and other files to be played on the Nintendo DS. Players can organize all of their favorite games onto one cartridge and choose which game files they would like to play. Games downloaded from the Internet, labeled as "Roms," are illegal to download and play on the R4 card unless you own the official game itself. However, many free homebrew games are available for download online as well and are legal to download and play on your DS.

Instructions

  Download the game you want to put on the R4 card to your computer. Be sure that the game ends in the file extension ".nds" so that it is compatible with your Nintendo DS.

  Download the official firmware from the official R4 website (See Resource links). Save the file to your computer.

  Insert the Micro SD card into a Micro SD card adapter or the SD card reader on your computer. If you are using an external Micro SD card adapter, plug it into the USB port on your computer.

  Open the Micro SD card folder on your computer to see the contents of the directory.

  Drag and drop the folder containing the official R4 card firmware into your Micro SD folder. You can also copy and paste the folder by right-clicking it and clicking "Copy," then right-clicking the Micro SD card folder and clicking "Paste."

  Drag and drop your game file with the file extension ".nds" into your Micro SD card folder. You can also copy and paste the file into the folder.

  Eject your Micro SD card from the Micro SD card adapter or from the SD card reader on your computer. Insert the card back into the Micro SD card slot on your R4 card.

  Put your R4 card into your Nintendo DS game slot. Open the R4 game file on the Nintendo DS's main menu. You will see a list of the games you put on your Micro SD card. Navigate with your DS's arrow keys to find a game you would like to play, and press "A" on your Nintendo DS to begin playing.
