HEPA filters can be placed in vacuum cleaners to filter dirt and dust.

Vacuum cleaners with high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter particles, dirt and dust. A HEPA filter is able to filter smaller particles than traditional vacuum cleaner filters. In order to be labeled a HEPA filter, the filter must undergo testing and be able to trap at least 99.97 percent of particles .3 microns or larger in size. Most manufacturers recommend throwing away and buying new HEPA filters when the HEPA filter being used because dusty, however, as long as the filter is not torn, it can be cleaned and reused. Instructions

      Follow the manufacturer's manual for removing the HEPA filter from your brand and model of vacuum cleaner.

      Take the filter outside. Use a medium-bristled brush to help loosen dirt and dust from the filter. Gently move around any pleats in the filter to get in between them.

      Spray compressed air on the filter to remove the dirt and dust.

      Fill a sink with enough warm water to submerge the filter and a squirt of liquid dish soap. Place the filter in the water. Use a sponge to lightly rub any remaining dirt and dust from the filter.

      Allow the filter to air dry.

      Inspect the HEPA filter. Ensure it has no tears or rips. If it is still in good condition, place it back into the vacuum cleaner.
