Square tubing is easily deformed by many cutting tools. Diagonal cutters and pipe cutters, for example, will easily penetrate the square tubing, but will also pinch the ends together. To cut square tubing properly requires carefully sawing through the material, without over applying pressure, to maintain the tube's original shape.
Things You'll Need
- square tubing
- permanent marker
- hack saw
Using a Hack Saw to Cut Square Tubing
Mark the desired cut line on the square tubing with a permanent marker.
Secure tubing in a vice. Protect the tubing with a cloth to minimize potential scratches from the vice. Ensure that the cut line is accessible.
Align the hack saw blade with the cut line. Pushing forward apply pressure down against the cut line. On return strokes, no additional pressure is needed--the hack saw will only cut in one direction. Continue sawing until tubing is divided.
Tips & Warnings
- After sawing, various finishing procedures may be used to eliminate the rough edges, such as sanding and filing.
- Wear safety glasses to prevent flying debris from damaging your eyes during cutting. Avoid touching the work piece or the blade immediately after cutting; they may be hot.
