Don't spend money on a maid when you can clean like the professionals.

Professional cleaning services can be costly, but it seems like they do such a great job. If you want to save money, clean your own home the way the pros do it and cut costs. The best way to start cleaning like a maid is to schedule a "cleaning day." That way, you won't try to squeeze cleaning in to other busy days; just try and keep a consistent cleaning day and stick to that. Does this Spark an idea?

Pick up clutter. Once you eliminate clutter it's easier to move forward with the actual cleaning. Put things back where they go, and put aside things that need to be donated or recycled like old magazines or newspapers. Throw away all the trash and enlist the help of family members to take their respective belongings back to their bedrooms.

Load your cleaning caddy. Using a cleaning caddy eliminates the need to keep going back and forth for supplies. Stock it with all your cleaning agents, microfiber cleaning cloths, a couple of trash bags and your duster.

    • 3

Dust knicknacks, shelves and picture frames with a genuine feather duster. Feather dusters are a little expensive, but they are excellent at removing dust, and reusable. Feather dusters also come with extendable handles that can be used for dusting light fixtures and high ceiling fans.

Clean windows and glass doors with a squeegee. You can use these on mirrors too. Get a streak free shine just like the pros do it using one of these tools. Spray glass cleaner on the surface and then squeegee it off.

Clean surfaces with natural products if possible. Baking soda and vinegar are effective for cleaning bathrooms, toilets and tubs, and diluted vinegar is also appropriate for kitchens. Natural products are usually less expensive than regular cleaning products and do just as good a job--sometimes better.

Clean the toilets with a mop instead of the old fashioned toilet brush. Toilet bowl mops look like miniature floor mops and can do a more thorough job than the brushes, and they don't slosh water out of the toilet while you are cleaning.

Mop floors using a flat mop with a cloth pad. These mops work better than old fashioned mops and you can angle them in hard to reach places. Mop each room that requires it after you have cleaned the surfaces so it will have plenty of time to dry.

Finish up with a good vacuum. A better vacuum with a HEPA filter and attachments will do wonders for cleaning your home. Use the attachments to clean under couch cushions and in hard to reach nooks and crannies.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pump up some energy by putting on some music or enjoying an audio book while you clean. It will make the time go by faster and get you moving. To keep your home clean and make cleaning days less stressful, try to clean a little at a time as you go about your day and put things back in their place.
