Adobe Systems' Portable Document Format (PDF) helps authors distribute non-editable documents that can be viewed and printed on any operating system with compatible viewing software installed. If you need to make changes to a PDF and do not have the source document originally used to create it, you can convert the file into Microsoft Word format. You can do this in Mac OS X with Adobe Acrobat Professional and Recosoft PDF2Office Professional, but the programs require purchase and must be installed on your computer. The Web-based PDF to Word utility converts PDFs at no charge.

  1. Adobe Acrobat Professional

      Open Adobe Acrobat Professional.

      Click "File" in the top menu bar and select "Open."

      Locate the PDF file you want to convert to Word and open it by double-clicking its icon.

      Click "File" again and select "Save As."

      Give the document a name, select a save location, choose "Microsoft Word Document" from the "Format" drop-down menu and click "Save." The PDF converts to Word format within seconds.

    PDF2Office Professional

      Open PDF2Office Professional.

      Navigate to the folder containing the PDF file you want to convert.

      Click once on the icon of the PDF file, hold your click, and then drag the PDF file from the folder and into the "Conversions Pane" that runs across the top of the PDF.

      Click the left-most drop-down menu below the "Control Center" heading, select "Convert to Word Processing File," and then choose the "Microsoft Word" option from the adjacent drop-down menu. The PDF file is converted to Word format within seconds.

      Drag the converted file from the Conversions Pane to a folder outside the program to complete the conversion process.

      Go to the PDF to Word website (see Resources).

      Click "Choose File," locate the PDF you want to convert, and then select it by double-clicking its icon.

      Select the "DOC" conversion option.

      Enter your email address in the corresponding field.

      Click "Convert." Your file will be converted to Microsoft Word format within a few minutes. Once complete, the file will be sent to the email address you provided.
