How to Make Your Own CD Album

How to Make Your Own CD Album thumbnail
Press CDs easily by submitting your content to a CD manufacturer.

While it may have been hard to make your own CD album in the 1980s and 1990s, musicians today can accomplish this task on their own, without the assistance of a record label. CD manufacturers like Disc Makers and Oasis CD Manufacturing provide artists an easy method by which to submit music and press CDs. You can make your own CD album by recording songs and submitting your music and artwork to a CD manufacturer.

Instructions

    • 1

Record your songs and save them as MP3 files on your computer's hard drive.

    • 2

Create artwork for your CD album. You can contact a graphic designer or design your own artwork. Create an image that corresponds to the nature of the music on the album. Save the image file on your hard drive.

    • 3

Contact a CD manufacturing company like Disc Makers (discmakers.com) or Oasis Disc Manufacturing (oasiscd.co).

    • 4

Download the appropriate template from the company's website for the CD album you want to produce. For example, you can choose between putting your CD album in a jewel case or in a sleeve. Put your album artwork into the appropriate space on the template.

    • 5

Contact the CD manufacturer and let them know how many CDs you want to order.

    • 6

Submit your album's MP3 files and artwork to the CD manufacturing company and make a payment via credit card.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider your finances and career status before ordering a lot of CDs. If you're just starting out as a music artist, order a small run to begin with. This way, you won't have ten thousand CDs lying around your house if they don't sell.

Hi James, Interesting article, but having worked the CD mastering & manufacturing industry for over 20 years, I can assure you that most reputable manufacturing company's will require a PQ encoded Red Book CD master and not MP3 files. The master is normally supplied as an audio CD-R or as a DDP image file. Most professional company's would not be happy to accept masters in MP3 format as this is a "lossy" codec that is inferior to CD 16 bit 44.1Khz audio. I would recommend WAV or AIF files if you wish to supply data files for mastering. Cheers Kev
