How to Remove Grease Stains From a Bike
With so many moving parts requiring lubrication, a bicycle serves as a veritable magnet for grease. A well-lubed chain, for example, attracts more than its share of dirt and grime. This greasy concoction can spread to other parts of the bicycle, leaving unsightly marks that can soil hands and clothes. After removing grease stains, take a few minutes to clean the chain. By cleaning the chain periodically, future grease stains can be prevented.
Things You'll Need
- Bicycle work stand (optional)
- Towel (as needed)
- Cloth or clean rag
- Rubbing alcohol
- Biodegradable solvent (chain cleaner)
- Chain lube

Grease Removal
-
1
Place the bicycle in a bicycle work stand. Lacking one of these, turn the bicycle upside down, standing it on its handlebar and seat. To prevent potential damage to the handlebar and seat, choose a smooth surface or place a towel beneath the bicycle.
-
2
Dampen a cloth or rag with rubbing alcohol.
-
-
3
Wipe any grease stains clean with the dampened rag. Check the underside of the bicycle and the parts of the frame nearest the chain. These are generally the dirtiest.
-
4
Use the dry, clean part of the rag to buff any part of the frame where grease has been removed.
Chain Cleaning
-
5
Dampen a rag with a biodegradable solvent. Solvents designed specifically for cleaning bicycle chains are available at local bike shops and online.
-
6
Wipe the dampened portion of the rag over the length of the chain. Wipe all sides of the chain. Use the pedals to rotate the chain as you clean.
-
7
Use a dry, clean section of the rag to wipe free any solvent clinging to the chain.
-
8
Use the rag to wipe down the chain rings and in between the rear sprockets. Keeping chain rings and sprockets clean helps keep the chain free of grime.
-
9
Lube the chain, using a proper bicycle chain lube. While rotating the chain, drop small amounts of lubricant in between the rivets.
-
10
Use the rag once again to wipe away any excess chain lube. Excess chain lube will attract dirt and grime all over again.
