How to Install Ubuntu on a Dell Inspiron 1200

Developed by Canonical Ltd., Ubuntu is a computer operating system, which is distributed as free and open source software. Glitches have been reported by some Dell Inspiron 1200 users when trying to install Ubuntu due to the computer’s problems with live session installation. To get around the live session, Ubuntu offers a text-based CD installation for use on computers such as the Inspiron 1200. With a few simple setup techniques, you can install Ubuntu software on your Dell Inspiron 1200 through the CD drive.

Instructions

    • 1

Quit all programs that you are currently running on your Dell Inspiron 1200 before you begin the installation process.

    • 2

Insert the Ubuntu CD into the CD/DVD drive. You can obtain an Ubuntu CD by filling out a request form on the Ubuntu website (see "Resources"). The CD will arrive via mail within six weeks.

    • 3

Restart your computer. The Ubuntu program will automatically launch upon rebooting.

    • 4

Select your language preference from the drop-down menu on the left side of the installation screen. Click on your language of choice, ensuring that your language choice is highlighted in blue before proceeding to the next step.

    • 5

Decide whether you want to try the Ubuntu program from the CD or completely install the operating system. If you have never used Ubuntu before, you may opt to try the system from the CD by clicking on the button that reads "Try Ubuntu 10.04." Doing this will not make any changes to your system. If you are ready to install Ubuntu, click on the button that reads "Install Ubuntu 10.04."

Select your location (where you are using the software) and the keyboard layout you prefer. The installation CD will automatically suggest the United States of America as the default location, so only change it if you live outside of the United States or prefer to use a different keyboard than a standard US keyboard.

Chose whether you want to install Ubuntu software alongside your current operating system. If you have enough space on your Dell Inspiron 1200, you may want to choose this option so the software does not override your current operating system. To do this, click on the circle next to "Install them side by side, choosing between them each startup." If you want to only use Ubuntu, click on the circle next to “Erase and use the entire disk.”

Enter your name, preferred login name and a password for your system, if you choose to use one. Carefully review all of your choices, then click the “Install” button. The installation program will run for several minutes. When it is finished, restart your computer to use Ubuntu.
