DIY Wireless Router Directional Amplifier

A wireless router uses an antenna to send a WiFi signal to devices connected to the wireless home network. You can amplify the antenna’s transmission capabilities by adding a booster, or directional amplifier. The booster will direct the signal from the antenna toward the devices on the wireless home network rather than broadcasting it in all directions. A few tools and household supplies are all you will need to make a directional amplifier for the wireless router.

Things You'll Need

  • Newspaper
  • Soft drink can
  • Can opener
  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Paper towel
  • Ruler

Instructions

    • 1

Place a sheet of the newspaper on a table. Place the soft drink can on the sheet.

    • 2

Remove the top of the can with the can opener. Carefully toss the top of the can in the trash. Wash the can with the dishwashing liquid. Throw the newspaper sheet in the trash.

    • 3

Dry the soft drink can with a paper towel and let it air-dry for 24 hours.

    • 4

Place a sheet of newspaper on a table. Stand the can on the newspaper with the open end up.

    • 5

Measure three inches up from the bottom of the can and make a mark. Punch a hole in the side of the can at the three-inch mark with the scissors.

    • 6

Rotate the blades of the scissors inside of the hole to smooth the inside edges.

    • 7

Angle the router's wireless antenna toward the devices that are receiving the WiFi signal.

    • 8

Place the antenna through the hole in the side of the can. Point the open end of the can in the direction of the devices that are receiving the WiFi signal.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use caution while removing the top of the can.
