How to Replace the Glass on an iPhone 2G thumbnail
A small Phillips screwdriver is needed for this project.

The glass panel on the iPhone 2G protects the LCD screen from damage. If this glass becomes broken or cracked, it should be replaced before further damage to the phone can take place. Replacing the glass panel requires disassembling the phone. This should only be attempted if you are comfortable working with sensitive, small electronic components.

Things You'll Need

  • iPhone case opener tool
  • Paper clip
  • Small Phillips screwdriver
  • Rubber cement
  • Replacement glass

Instructions

    • 1

      Insert a straightened paper clip into the hole where the sim tray is located. Pull the sim tray out after it pops out from the phone.

      Turn the phone over. Run the edge of a case opener tool along the groove between the top and bottom portions of the back of the case. Remove the bottom portion of the case and set it aside.

      Remove the three small screws with the small Phillips screwdriver that are located along the top of the area that is now exposed.

      Run the edge of the case opener tool along both sides of the case to detach the back of the case from the front. Lift the back portion of the case up. Disconnect the single ribbon that is connecting the back of the case to the rest of the phone.

      Pry out the three antenna cables with the small Phillips screwdriver. One is located directly above the bottom section of the case. One is located on the top right corner of the metal plate above the bottom section of the phone. The third cable is connected near the top of the phone in the middle. You will notice that all three connectors are part of the same antenna cable that runs along the right side of the inside of the phone.

      Remove the 10 screws located around the outside edge of the case on all sides with the small Phillips screwdriver. One of the screws is behind a piece of tape on the bottom edge of the phone. The other nine are exposed.

      Remove the three screws around the metal motherboard cover with the small Phillips screwdriver. One is located on the bottom of the metal panel. One is located in the top right corner of the metal panel. One is located on the left side of the metal panel. Lift the motherboard panel out, being careful not to break the cables that connect the motherboard to the battery.

      Remove the battery and motherboard together, leaving the cables attached.

      Turn the phone over so the front is again facing up. Lift off the metal frame that goes around the entire phone.

      Pry open the clips that hold the LCD screen in place. There are three clips on each side of the LCD. Remove the LCD screen along with the connected digitizer. You may have to gently work it back and forth to get it to come loose from the base. Be careful not to break any of the cables that are connected to the LCD.

      Place three small dots each of rubber cement on the top, bottom and sides of the inside border of the new glass piece. Affix the LCD screen to the glass piece.

      Reverse the disassembly process to put the phone back together.

  • Opening the iPhone will void your warranty.
