How to Paint a Kitchen Island

- Plastic sheeting
- Orange oil wood cleaner

Remove any cabinet doors from the island. Use a screwdriver to remove hinges from the doors, as well as any hardware like knobs or handles. Place them on plastic sheeting on a work surface.

Wipe down the island and doors with an orange-oil wood cleaner and a clean cloth. The orange oil cleans away any built-up grease or dirt from the surface to prepare it for painting.

Run fine-grit sandpaper over the surfaces of the island and the doors to smooth out any rough wood areas. Wipe down any dust from sanding with a cloth dampened with water and allow to dry completely before adding primer.

Spread a tarp on the floor around the island to prevent any paint spills from staining the floor. Apply a kitchen paint primer to the entire island using a paintbrush. Paint in the direction of the wood grain all the way around the island. Allow to dry for four hours before painting. While it dries, apply primer to the doors.

Paint the island in the color of your choice. Using the paintbrush, apply a thin coating of color in the direction of the wood grain around the entire island. Applying a thin coat will keep brushstrokes to a minimum and reduce drying time. Allow the first coat to dry for approximately four hours. While each coat dries, paint the cabinet doors the same way and allow to dry thoroughly.

Apply two more coats of paint, with a four-hour drying time between each coat. Allow the final coat to dry at least four hours before reattaching the drawers, doors and hardware with a screwdriver.
